Last Thursday, Congressman Michael Guest met with constituents at the Pike County Courthouse. His district includes roughly a quarter of the state from Starkville in the north all the way to Pike, Marion and Walthall in the south. Congressman Guest emphasized that a Republican flip of House leadership is the best way to fix issues such as surging inflation, increasing crime rates, and our border security crisis.
Guest is a former district attorney in Rankin and Madison counties, has served the 3rd Congressional District since 2019, and is seeking a third term. He faces Democrat Shu-waski Young in the general election to be held November 8th.
Guest said Republican priorities are outlined in the recently announced “Commit-ment to America.” Rep. Guest also said that his and the Republican’s priorities, once they take over the majority of the U.S. House of Representatives, will be fighting record inflation, controlling immigration along the southern border, reducing the national debt and clamping down on violent crime and drugs. “We’ve seen that those issues have really exploded over the last 2 years. Rep. Guest criticized President Joe Biden’s executive orders that reduced domestic oil production and said the U.S. was less dependent on foreign oil under former President Donald Trump. Guest also highlighted the issue of the insecure border and the fact that illegal immigration has gone unabated and drug overdose deaths keep rising as a result of increase drug trafficking by cartels across our borders. He said he wants to replace Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with Republican Kevin McCarthy. Pelosi and McCarthy are both from California. Guest also wants to reverse Biden’s efforts to add 87,000 IRS employees.
When asked about other big issues facing Mississippi Guest said infrastructure has been a big issue. Guest said the expansion of rural broadband to make sure high-speed internet is available everywhere is critical for attracting new business to Mississippi.
As a result of the expected changes in the Midterm elections and the Republicans regaining control of the “House” Guest is optimistic that that the American people will once again trust Con-gress, he said “particularly the House of Representatives, in the hands of Republicans so we can serve as a counter balance to what we’ve seen decisions made under one party.”
City Editor’s Note: In researching this article I had not heard of Rep. Michael Guest Democratic opponent- Shuwaski Young. - S. What I found in my research was Mr. Young affirms support for abortion, gun control, bringing good paying rural area jobs to MS03, helping small business hurt by COVID-19, and democracy for all- protecting the ballot box.
Mr. Young grew up in Philadelphia, Neshoba County and joined the Coast Guard at age 17. He later served in the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama Administration, overseeing the nationwide “If You See Something, Say Something™” public awareness campaign. Most recently, he served as the California Democratic Party’s organizing director for the San Francisco Bay Area during the 2018 midterm primary elections.
In 2019 he was selected as the new Director of Donor & Community Engagement for The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) of the Bar Association of San Francisco. A review of Mr. Young’s LinkedIn Profile shows that he served as the director of the San Francisco JDC from Feb. 2019 to June 2021. Although there is no minimal state residency requirements for serving in Congress (which is very different from the minimal residency requirement (2 years) for serving in a local municipality office), based on published data Mr. Young has been a recent resident of Mississippi for less than 17 months.
