Even before our new Mayor takes office on July 1st
Mayor-elect Marvin Brumfield has initiated a series of Community Listening Meetings aimed at fostering open dialogue between the city’s administration and its residents. These meetings are designed to provide citizens with a platform to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and contribute to the shaping of local governance.
The primary goal of these gatherings is to ensure that the voices of the community are heard and considered in the decision-making processes.
Mayor-elect Brumfield believes that transparent and inclusive governance are essential for building trust and promoting civic engagement.
Last week, the first of four meetings, one for each Ward, was held on Thursday, May 8, at the Magnolia Community Center. Between 25 and 30 residents showed up to communicate their concerns and hopes for the future of Magnolia.
In addition to
Mayor-elect Brumfield, all of the newly elected Aldermen/Alderwomen attended. This definitely showed a sense of unity of Magnolia’s elected officials, working together to hear the citizens and build a better future for Magnolia.
The primary themes heard from the citizens centered around the future of Magnolia, concerns for public safety, building an economic base and businesses for the city, and city beautification, including paving streets. Mayorelect Brumfield opened the floor and took several questions from the residents attending.
A question concerning the city’s departments and employees creating a response from the mayor-elect that “he was not there to take anyone’s job away but to make sure that all city employees were doing the job they were hired to do and making sure the citizen were proud of their employees.” M a y o r - e l e c t Brumfield emphasized that “It’s going to take effort from everyone to make the future of Magnolia prosper.”
The next community listening session is targeted for Ward 2 residents and will take place this Thursday, May 15 at 6:30pm at the Community Center. Wards 3 and 4 meetings are being held on the successive Thursdays.
